2010 'tipping point' for online video productions on demand Online video expert says that there will be an explosion in people watching internet videos via TV sets.
Online video on demand (VOD) will become one of the biggest forms of media in 2010, an expert has predicted.
In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, Michael Comish of VOD company Blinkbox Entertainment claims that there will be an explosion of people viewing online video, particularly as new technology allows them to do so over their TV sets.
Mr Comish outlined three ways this well happen: Firstly some new televisions will come with internet facilities built in; secondly, via games consoles that allow users to download content from the internet; and thirdly, through set-top boxes that connect to the internet such as Project Canvas, a joint venture between assorted broadcasters, including the BBC.
"All that takes you from a big market to a colossal market," he told the newspaper. "I think there will be pricing pressure, but what you have to realise is that this is more efficient distribution than the traditional retail model. You can do it much more cheaply."
"This year is the tipping point," he added.
Last week, Samsung announced it will soon produce internet-connected TVs with video providers BBC iPlayer and LOVEFilM already signed up to make their content available.
